Why Do I Have to Worry About The Afterlife?
When talking to a person about their eternity, the afterlife, one question that goes through their mind is “Why? What difference does it make?” Does it make a difference? Absolutely! A person’s eternal destiny depends upon the decision they make while alive. In (John 3:7), Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was speaking to Nicodemus, He told him that “You must be born again.” Why be born again or the other term, “saved”? Because everyone, including you and me, are sinners.
The apostle Paul wrote to the Romans, “For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God” -Romans 3: 23
In other words, Paul is telling us that God has a standard of sinless perfection that you or I cannot live up to. Therefore, since everyone has sinned we are guilty of penalty of our sins. You can call this the eternal death penalty because the bible also states, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) Therefore, we need salvation or to be saved.
God loves YOU and with His endless mercy has provided a way of salvation with the ultimate sacrifice for our sins through his Son, Jesus Christ. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
Jesus Christ, God’s Son, bore our sins when he took our place on the cross of Calvary. He died in our place, so we might have the opportunity to accept Him as our Savior and receive that gift of salvation. Just imagine, no death and that is a gift for life and you do not receive that many free gifts! Jesus paid that penalty for us in full. In other words, that account is paid in full “But God demonstrates his own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
Now, since we are sinners and Christ offered himself on the cross a person my wonder what do I have to do to be saved? Do a dance? Be good? Give my iPhone to a homeless person? Believe me, it is easier than you think. It is a belief and faith that Jesus died for your sins. The Philippian jailer asked Paul, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30-31) Paul replied to him, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.…”
So, what must you do to receive Christ as your Savior?
- First, you must admit that you are a sinner and need to be saved.
- Second, you must repent and be willing to turn from your sin.
- Third, you must believe that Jesus Christ died for you on the cross.
- Fourth, you must receive through prayer, Jesus Christ into your heart and life.
“That if you confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God hath raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)
For "whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13)
If you are reading this and feeling something inside, then it is God reaching out to your heart and knocking on the door. If that is the case, then open that door wide and let Him come in. I guarantee you will feel something awesome. You can receive Christ through prayer. Here is a simple prayer of salvation.
“Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I know that I need you. I believe that you died on the cross for me. Forgive me of my sins. Right now, I turn from my sins and open the door of my heart and life to you. I receive you as my Savior, come into my life and save me. Thank you for what you did for me. Amen.”
Now, just saying that prayer is not going to save you soul, but also BELIEVING in your heart on the Lord Jesus Christ. With faith (trusting) in Jesus for one’s salvation is essential.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Now, you need to trust His Word when Jesus said, “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” (John 10:9)
