If you are a Christian, you need to understand that we are in a continual battle against our adversary, the devil, a spirit being whose sole purpose is to cause havoc for each of us. God has a goal for each of our lives and the devil also has a goal and that is to get us off track of God's plan for our lives. It seems to me that he waits until we’re at a vulnerable place before bringing forth his attack. Therefore, we must be on our guard every single moment, every single day!
1 Peter 5:8-9 commands us, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.” STAY on guard, stay awake, be alert because your adversary is seeking a vulnerable prey.
The enemy has two powerful weapons called fear and doubt and he knows exactly when to fire those two weapons. There are times when we may feel like our backs are against the wall with no way out. There are times when we are just overwhelmed with the giants of life and they can be very intimidating. This is when the enemy comes alongside and fires those weapons, speaking words of fear and doubt.
Another one of the enemy’s weapons of mass destruction is discouragement. He is always trying to discourage us from believing we will ever walk in triumph. He is a liar and the king of all lies. We can either stand and fight or run and hide, the choice is ours to make. It doesn't matter what the circumstances look like and what the devil says. The most important thing is what God’s Word says about our particular situation.
Several verses in the Bible tells us to seize and hold fast and not waiver because God is with us even when it doesn’t seem so. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 teaches us that our weapons are not carnal but are mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds in our mind. Most of our spiritual weapons are for defense but one weapon is an offensive weapon. We always need to be on defense, but we also need to be on the offense so that requires us to learn how to use that weapon, the Word of God.
I like what one writer said: “Casting down imaginations, thoughts, reasonings, and theories that don't agree with God's Word requires us to use our offensive weapon-the Word of God coming out of our mouth. When we speak, it becomes a two-edged sword that defeats the enemy with one edge and opens the blessings of heaven with the other. There are many other weapons that are defensive, but the Word is offensive-it chases the enemy, driving him back.”
We should never be the ones who back down from Satan in defeat. No! We must be bold in our faith and continue to push back the powers of darkness by using God’s Word as our weapon. Satan fears those who truly grasp hold of God’s Word and begin using it to their advantage. He knows the power the Word carries, and that he is no match against it. “Jesus said to him, Get thee behind me Satan! For it is written…” Matthew 4:10.
Ephesians 6: 10-17, tells us to put on the WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD in order to fight off Satan’s tricks of deception. I don’t always understand some of the outcomes of battle. For example, a Christian couple being married for 30 years and then trouble begins to interrupt what was once a great marriage. The wife begins to pray, and she gets her friends to pray, they’re praying the right things; she’s seeking the Lord, reading and quoting Scripture but the divorce goes through and she is left devastated. I may not understand it but my faith never waivers because I know the power of sin. God has given man a free will and the wife chalks it up as a battle scar. Jesus went to heaven with the scars of battle, but He won the victory and so will we! God Bless!
