God-Given Rights

By: Woody Godbey

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
— Luke 4:18

I don’t know about you guys out there, but I believe that when God created man He gave us “God Given Rights.”  People of my generation know that we Americans have lost many of the rights our forefathers shed their blood for.  This country started its downward spiral to hell when the government took over the schools and began its attack on the Ten Commandments.

I believe the story of our God-given rights is the missing piece to restore our nation again. The story of Liberty reaches its peak in America with the Mayflower Compact and the landing of the Pilgrims in 1620.  But that’s not where the story begins.  It began almost 2000 years ago in Nazareth when the author of liberty, Jesus gave His first sermon to his home synagogue. The story is detailed in Luke chapter 4. Take some time and read it.  He opened the book (a Scroll) to Isaiah 61 and read the prophecy of the purpose of the Messiahs coming.  He specified that he came to heal the broken-hearted, the blind, and to preach the Gospel to the poor. But please notice that when He came to the subject of Liberty, He said He came to set the captives free, and then He repeated it a second time saying He came to set those that were in bondage free.

When He finished reading the passage Jesus sat down and told the men that this prophecy had been fulfilled in their midst.  The liberation of the world began that day. Jesus unleashed through His loving message of redemption, the power and principles that would bring liberty to the nations of the world. If a nation honors the Lord and His laws, that nation will experience freedom and blessings.  We can follow a paper trail of liberty from the blood bought freedom documents that flowed out from the Magna Carta, English Bill of rights, Mayflower compact, to our Declaration of Independence and Constitution.  I remember writing a paper for a church history class and I did a research on the Magna Carta constitution.  King John was pretty much a tyrant and the barons rebelled against the King and he ended up putting his seal on the Magna Carta Constitution.  If I’m not mistaken, that was Europe’s first constitution.  Much of our bill of rights come from the Magna Carta.

Political, economic and religious liberty had never been realized until the founders, the Pilgrim fathers applied the principles of the Bible fully to civil law.  I believe the only way we can restore freedom and prosperity in America, is to return to those biblical principles of right which are those laws given at Mount Sinai.  And then, hold our leaders accountable to limit their jurisdiction to the protection of our God-given rights, not the limitation or interpretation of them.  If the Ten Commandments were still the law of the land, America wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in.  Christians stand up and be the soldiers of the Cross like those great men who understood there is no freedom outside of Christ.  Have a great weekend and God Bless!
