A Fan of God

Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord! And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
— Joshua 24:14-15

I’ve been a Texas Longhorn fan from early childhood and I have seen it all.  We’ve had seasons with a lot of cheering and we’ve had seasons with a lot of crying!  It’s been a lot of crying the last several years.  Back in 2005, we went undefeated and won the national championship game against USC.  This is what I noticed that year. Suddenly, people who haven't followed the Longhorns all season become the world's greatest Texas Longhorn fans. You see the burnt orange jerseys come out and sometimes even the hook ‘em horns sign. If you would have asked them, they have been Longhorn fans for years (except for this year when they are Oklahoma Sooner fans). Everybody loves a winner. And when there is success you see the closet fans come out.

One of the greatest sermons I’ve ever heard in my life was by Brother Don Noble which he titled “The Fan.”  In that sermon he likened a true fan of God to a true sports fan.  My question for you today is, 'What kind of fan are you when it comes to your faith in God?  Are you a true fan of God or are you a bandwagon fan?  Be a faithful fan!  God loves faithful fans!

A true fan of God has a faith that is real. It does not mean you have to act super-religious or be able to talk 'Bible talk'. What it means is that you have asked God to come into your heart to be with you, to guide your steps in life and to help teach you what you should do.  Be a faithful fan!  God loves faithful fans!

Many people consider themselves Christians for the wrong reasons. They say that they are Christian because they are a member of a church. "I'm a Baptist, therefore I am a Christian.” Or "I was baptized; therefore, I am a Christian.” Some people like to ride coat tails: "I am a Christian because my parents are Christians."  Be a faithful fan!  God loves faithful fans!

But God does not want you to have a fake faith. He does not want you to be a fair-weather fan, only calling on Him in times of disaster. He wants you to take a stand, make a decision, and call His name and put your trust in Him for now, and the rest of your life.  Be a faithful fan!  God loves faithful fans!

A real faith comes from the heart. A real faith comes from making the decision to stand up and say, I am a friend of God and I will love Him even when times are tough.  I will follow Him through the seasons of life and through thick and thin.  Be a faithful fan!  God loves faithful fans!

If you have never asked the Lord to save you, do it today. All it takes is a prayer of faith.  Ask him to come into your life and in so doing, become a true friend and fan of God. Be a faithful fan!  God loves faithful fans!
