An Unfair Life

By: Woody Godbey

Take some time this morning and read Job 2:1-10 and Job 42:12. When life seems like it’s treating me unfair, I think about what Job went through and how he fared in the storm.  That usually brings conviction and I’ll tell you why in a minute.  When I read the first two chapters of Job, it seems like God is allowing Job to be punished, and not just punished, but punished for doing what is good and right.  Job is the perfect picture of a man’s love and faithfulness to God, and bad things keep happening to him.

Job’s situation seems unfair and life is often like that.  It may be hard for us to understand sometimes but Jobs story gives us some insight into the fairness of life.  In Job 2:10, Job says, “shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?”  Another versions says, “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”  When we read Job’s words, we should all feel conviction, I know I do!   We willingly accept the Lord’s blessings, but we become resentful, angry and bitter when difficulty comes our way.  How many times have we complained that life is unfair when we are the recipients of unfairness?  The real truth is, we don’t deserve the love we receive from the Lord.  What we deserve is the death Jesus experienced on the cross.

Remember, Jobs troubles and his insight of God’s love came long before Jesus came to this earth.  So, before Jesus walked on this earth and gave us the New Testament and its teachings, Job understood that God’s goodness is a gift.  Christians are not guaranteed an easy, trouble-free life.  What we are guaranteed is God’s unconditional love and that He will not abandon us.  He can do all things, He can overcome all things, and His plans are never thwarted.

Listen folks, whether we see a situation as a blessing or a curse, God makes all things work together for our good and His glory.  At the end of Job’s story in Job 42:12, we see God blessed the later part of his life more than the first.  Even in our lowest and desperate situations, God is with us and has plans to give us hope.  It’s not always easy to stay calm when life is throwing everything including the kitchen sink at us, but knowing that God is there with us makes it a whole lot easier.

The next time life seems like it’s treating you unfairly, remember that God is going to work everything out for your good and His glory.  God Bless!
