Building the Church

I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
— Matthew 16:18b

Let this sink deep into your heart, the only thing on this earth that will live and last forever is the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. It's true that the lost will suffer in hell forever but that's not what I would call living forever but an eternal state of dying.

In our day and time, we see so much worrying, fretting, fears and thoughts going on in the business world, the government, world events and the nation. We spend so much of our time and energy to things that are temporary. No business is going to last forever. No government is going to last forever. No nation is going to last forever. Only the Church is going to last forever.

Jesus said in our text that He was building a church and all the powers of hell wouldn't be able to conquer it. Only God could have had such a magnificent thought. The Church wasn't thought up by man but by our Creator. God is its architect and Jesus is the builder.

Think about it like this, the entire universe was created for God’s family. What’s God’s family called? The Church.

Some people think the Church is where they attend every Sunday. No, that's a building where the Church meets. The Church is not a building. The Church is the family of God. God wanted a family, so He created the entire universe just so He could create Earth just so He could create human beings just so we could have the free choice to choose or reject Him. He knew that some of us would choose to love Him back, and he’s going to take us to Heaven to be part of His family forever.

What does this mean for us who are already in God’s family? It means that since we’re all going to live together forever, we better learn to get along. While we're here on Earth, we must love the family of God.

It’s not enough just to love God. You must love the Church. You want to know how much God loves the church? He died for it. Anybody who says, “I love Jesus, but I don’t need the Church” doesn’t get it. That person is an immature believer. When I pastored, I found out very quickly that a lot of people use the Church but don’t love it. I'm sure that some of those people were not even saved. We go to Church to get but we also need to give. We go to Church and get all charged up and then we just sit around and let our batteries run down until the next Sunday.

Every Christian should be a witness for Christ but we should also be workers for Him. So many Christians think the workers are those they see doing things on Sunday's and other times when the Church meets. The real work is outside the building where the Church meets. A visit to a shut-in, a card for thought, a meal, encouragement, a gift, work of kindness, etc. etc. etc…..

There are so many things we can do to SHOW OUR LOVE and help our family. And by the way, our family members are not just the ones in the church we attend. We have family members all over the world but your community is a good place to start. James 1: 27 is one of my favorite verses. "Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world." Have a great day and remember your family today and every day! God Bless!!
