Gog and Magog

But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near
— Luke 21:20

Open your Bible to Ezekiel 38 and 39 while reading this and you can see the Scriptures speaking loud and clear.

I saw on the news that the Palestinians are doing their thing in Israel and that Cuba has entered Syria to help Russia and I am excited as I can be. I believe we are about to be raptured out of this place. I stayed up studying my Hebrew Lexicon and the Scriptures last night so that maybe I can generate some excitement in God's people about what is taking shape in the Middle East.

I believe what we're seeing in the Middle East is the beginning of the end! The invasion of Israel by armies from the north and the south led by Russia is one of the most distinct prophecies of the Bible. For some, it might be scary and startling, and to others, faith-building! I'm not a date setter but today many of the armies are in place and the Antichrist is about to arise. The prophecy of the ten super nations and their infighting is about to begin and the result, Russia invades Israel, just as God foretold in Ezekiel 38-39. This invasion won't happen during the church age but about three and a half years after our rapture. But things are lining up and I'm excited.

“The word of the LORD came to me: “Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshek and Tubal; prophesy against him and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of Meshek and Tubal." (Ezekiel 38:1-3)

The Bible identifies the evil forces opposed to God as 'Magog', and its leader as Gog and that could be Putin. There are several reasons for understanding that Gog and Magog may refer to what is called modern Russia. We see the name, Magog, first in Genesis 10:2, as one of the sons of Japheth, one of the grandsons of Noah. In the ancient time, it was customary for tribal and later on, national names to evolve from the name of the original founder. According to Josephus, a first century historian, the tribal name, Magog, moved northward from the Middle East to what is now modern day Russia.

From Hebrew Lexicon: "The term, 'Gog' is translated from the Hebrew phrase, 'nesi rosh'. While 'rosh' can be an adjective meaning 'head' or leader, it can also mean a proper place name, 'Rosh'." The Hebrew lexicon indicates that Rosh here is the proper name of a people which is today's Russia.

Now listen to what else we get from the Hebrew Lexicon and Harold Wilmington. "'Tubal' and 'Meshech' were the fifth and sixth sons of Japheth, and their descendants settled south of the Black Sea. The name, 'Moscow' derives from the tribal name, 'Meshech', and 'Tobolsk', the name of the principal state, from 'Tubal'"

That might be 'Greek' for some but I'm convinced that God was referring to modern Russia in this passage in Ezekiel 38-39. But, God lists one more identifying factor. In verse 38:6 and 15, and also in 39:2, God says that this attacking force will come from the north. When God gives direction in the Bible, it is always in reference to His Chosen Nation, Israel. God see's Israel as being located right smack in the middle of the Earth. So, what nation or nations lie to the uttermost north from Israel or Jerusalem specifically? Get your map out and you'll see that Modern day Russia lies directly north of Israel and Moscow lies directly north of Jerusalem.

In verse 38:4, we see that God is going to allow Russia to arm herself with a very great army, probably for a purpose other than invading Israel. But, then, God Himself is going to "I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws and bring you out with your whole army...." The term, 'hooks in your jaws' is the same idea as placing a bridle in the mouth of a horse, to control his behavior and direction. In other words, God is going to place His bridle into the mouth of the Russian Bear and turn him toward Israel. And, make no mistake about the fact that this invasion is God's judgment. In 38:3, God made it quite plain "and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of Meshek and Tubal." Given God's long-suffering nature, His Mercy and His Grace, it is shocking to hear Him say these words of judgment. Then, to ensure that we understand that God is getting ready to judge Russia, we read, in 38:10, " ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: On that day thoughts will come into your mind and you will devise an evil scheme.” God will cause the evil thought to come into the mind of the Russian rulers to plan, and execute, the plan to invade and destroy Israel.

Even though Russia will field an army that would easily defeat tiny Israel, God foretells that it will have allies that will march with them, allies that will be trained, organized and equipped by Russia (38:4). God lists the nations which will be marching with Russia and I will list those in a minute.

Don't forget, these nations will be coming from both the north and the south of Israel, which parallels the prophecy of the same event in Daniel 11:40. Take some time and read Daniel and Ezekiel’s prophecies concerning this attack. Let’s look at Ezekiel’s lists of nations which will be marching with Russia.

1. Persia which is Modern day Iran--from the North

2. Cush is Ethiopia or Sudan--from the South. No doubt that ancient Cush is Cush could be a group of Africans nations from that same region who are already radical Islamic.

3. Put is Modern day Libya--from the South

4. Gomer and the House of Togarmah These ancient names found their location in what today is the country of Turkey. I think we could throw Egypt and Jordan in here too.

The outcome will be a slaughter but it will be the aggressors from the north and south who are slaughtered. That's right, Russia and her allies will be bombed by giant hail stones and Israel will know that God intervened on their behalf. Its close and I can't help but to say, Hurry Lord Jesus! God Bless!
