A Place Called Hell

By: Woody Godbey

I preached this sermon last week to a group of Christians and I think it was well received.  We got a close look at a place called hell and I think it challenged us all to be more active in telling others about this place and how to avoid it.  Of course this is only a rough outline of the whole sermon.   I added point V1. for the blog so you’re getting one point more than last week’s group.

Luke 16:19-31--If you're not familiar with this story, be sure to read it before you get into the sermon.  It's the story of a real man who went to a real hell!

I.  A PLACE CALLED HELL

Our text tell us that hell is a real place, just as real as any other geographic place.  People believe that heaven is real but only a small portion of the world believes in a place called hell.  It's Jesus who is telling the story in our text, He believed in hell.  Where is hell?  I don't have a clue but the Bible teaches us that it is a place of eternal separation from the presence of God.

II. THE PEOPLE IN HELL

This rich man was no doubt a family man.  He was some mother’s son, maybe he left a wife and children behind.  One thing we know for sure is that he had brothers who were heavy on his heart.

Here is the sad fact, people you know and people I know will populate Hell. In fact, it may be those of your own household that die and go there.  Hell was created by God for Satan and the fallen angles.  But people go there who reject Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.  Like Cain who slew his brother Able.  He tried to worship God his way instead of the Gods way.  The people of Noah's day will be there too.  The men of Sodom will be there also, those who tried to seduce the angles who came to warn Lot to flee Sodom because God was going to destroy it.   Pilate will be there and all unbelievers.  Hell is filled with people who lived and died without Christ.

III. THE PAIN OF HELL

When I preached this sermon I used over a dozen Scriptures that described hell and its pain.  It's even here in our text, it couldn’t be anymore plain that Hell is a place of pain and torment.  There are those who believe this story is symbolic.  They had better hope not!  Symbolism is only used when conventional language is inadequate to describe something. The reality is always much worse than the symbol!

Here are some Biblical descriptions of hell that describe the real torments that Hell contains:

1. Unquenchable Fire – Mark 9:43; Luke 16:24

2. Memory and remorse – Ill. Rich man – "Son remember" 25, 27-28

3. Intense, unsatisfied thirst – Luke 16:24-25

4. Misery and pain – Luke 16:24-26; Rev. 14:10-11

5. Frustration and anger – Luke. 13:28; Matt. 24:51

6. Eternal separation – Rev. 21:8 – Ill. From what? Everything beautiful!

7. Undiluted wrath – Ill. Rainbow, Hab. 3:2! In Hell, God’s fury will be unleashed!

Someone may ask, but what if it's not true?  But what if it is?????  Who would want to gamble on spending an eternity in hell?

IV. THE PLEA'S IN HELL

Notice the rich man is pleading for mercy and relief from torment caused from the flames of hell.  But what is so sad is the plea for his brothers who were still alive on earth.  He was pleading for God to send Lazarus back to earth to warn them of that horrible place.  But it was impossible, besides, if they didn't believe the Scriptures, they wouldn't believe because one rose from the dead.  Sad to say, but I wonder how many are in hell today pleading for someone to tell their lost relatives and friends about that horrible place called hell.

V.  THE PERMANENCE OF HELL

The rich man was told that there was no escape and that he had to stay there for ever and ever and ever.  He is still there this today!  Eternity has no end!!

If you die without Jesus Christ, you will most certainly go to Hell!  If you go to Hell, you will be there forever, with one little exception found in Rev. 20:11-15!

Don't be deceived by the cults and the liberal churches. Hell is not: Annihilation – Rev. 19:20; 20:10! Rev. 14:10.  It is not A Temporary Place of Purging – v. 26 and hell is not the grave – v. 22-23

Hell is not a parable, and it is not a scare tactic. It is reality and it is waiting on all who reject The Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior.

VI. THE PROMISE FOR AVOIDING HELL v. 27-31

Hell can be avoided through a real promise.  The rich man is told that the Word of God holds the answer.  The Bible tells us of God’s love for sinners – John 3:16.  Of Christ’s death to save them – Isa. 53:1-12; Rom. 5:6-8; 2 Cor. 5:21.  Of Christ’s resurrection that guarantees eternal life to all who come to him by faith – Matt. 28:6; John 11:25-26.  That same Bible tells of a God who will save all who will come to Him by His grace.  Jesus said, "if ANY man come unto me, I will in no wise cast him out.  He said ANY MAN!  Come to Him in faith and He will save you and take you to heaven at the end of this life.
