Christ Is Coming Soon

But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.
— Matthew 24:36-39

In these verses Jesus is speaking about the timing of His return. As we watch, wait and countdown the return of Jesus Christ, we often point out trends and signs that indicate that time is growing short. It's clearly seen in the Scriptures that Jesus often pointed out the conditions that would prevail in the end-time, just prior to His return to establish His Kingdom.

In one very interesting discourse, Jesus points us back to the conditions that existed at the time of Noah’s flood. I want to be honest, we just don't know very much about life before the flood – in fact, all that anyone knows about that antediluvian time is contained within the Biblical record. Antediluvian is a fancy way of saying, “before the deluge or flood.” The Bible is the only record we have of that period. What I want you to see is how similar things are today, compared to the pre-flood world.

I went to my great niece's wedding yesterday and that is what brought me to this subject. Why would Jesus choose an indicator that is as present in society as marriage? Within God’s Church, we are aware of the deep spiritual significance of a Godly marriage. First, with regard to God’s plan to reproduce in His likeness and, secondly, as a figure and illustration of the Church’s intimate relationship with Jesus Christ (Revelation 19:7-9).

I have preached many sermons about Noah's day. I have often used our text “marrying and giving in marriage” to mean that everything would be going along in a normal fashion. That may be true but I've also preached sermons from the same text to see's it in a different meaning and I lean this way more than the other. A look back into the Old Testament reveals that conditions were so extremely evil as to bring about God’s wrath – the global destruction of mankind except Noah and his immediate family.

Remember, Jesus tells us that, “marrying and giving in marriage,” was one of the categories in which the violations of His will and law was taking place.

“Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. And the Lord said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown. Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the Lord said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them." (Genesis 6:1-7)

In the same way that un-godly marriage practices brought the world to the very brink of annihilation in Noah’s day, un-godly marriage practices will be the norm when Jesus returns. The judges, politicians, and people who are promoting and passing laws contrary to Gods laws beware. Same sex marriage, homosexual vows, extremely high divorce rate, living together outside of marriage do make a travesty of God’s intended marriage covenant, and will incur God’s fiery wrath (2 Peter 3:7). God Bless!
