The Sleeping Giant Gets a Wakeup Call
At times a person can make a person decision that can have a major impact on their lives and changes literally happen. If a year ago someone told me that I would have a Christian based web site and teaching a class on Sunday morning I would have first laugh and then ask them if they were under the influence of anything! My, how things can change if you make that decision to live for Jesus Christ and not for yourself.
One afternoon a few months ago I was driving on day listening to Christian music. I love listening to Christian music and I get that “feel good” emotion when I play some music about Jesus Christ. If you feel the same way then you're not alone. Songs of praise to God is another expression to worship God and the music inspires us.
One particular song came on and it was from the band Petra and the title of the song is ‘Sleeping Giant’. I’ve always liked the song but never paid much attention to the lyrics but this one afternoon I finally “heard” the words. Have you ever listened to Christian Music and were inspired? I had to listen to the song again to make sure what I was hearing and it was no mistake; I was under conviction that I wasn’t living for Christ every day and I was that “Sleeping Giant”.
Romans 13:11 says a lot about sleeping when it’s written, “And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.”
Some of the words to the lyrics can apply to some of us when we don’t fully serve Christ with a whole heart: Sleeping the night away / When will this giant awake and stand free / Now the hour has come to awaken and redeem the time given to the night / Curse this darkness and stand in the light / The sleeping giant gets a wake-up call / Awake from your sleep ‘cause it’s time to stand tall
Been sleeping so long / How can we hope to discern the right from the wrong?
Each time we sleep through an inch we're losing a mile / It’s been dark for so long night is almost gone
Always the darkest before the dawn.
Basically you’re not to stay a baby in Christ but to mature and grow in your faith. In Hebrews 5:12-14 God’s word empathetically stresses this point when it says, “In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”
So today make that commitment to serve Jesus Christ and you will see a change in your life. It’s easier than you think, but first you have to decide. Serve yourself first or serve God first.
