Fallen From Grace?

By: Woody Godbey

Ephesians 4:30 "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” Once a person is sealed, he is sealed until final delivery. That seal is a final transaction. Yesterday I was asked the question, can a Christian fall from grace? The answer is NO and every scripture that people use to say otherwise is taken out of context. Scriptures are clear and no true Christian should ever worry about losing something that they have given to Christ.

One of the verses people use to prove that a Christian can fall from grace is Galatians 5:4, "For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God's grace." I used the NLT here so that everyone can understand why they use it. Paul is warning against setting aside the grace that comes from Christ. Those who do have nullified, or run away from, the grace that comes through His blood and attempted instead to justify themselves by the works of the Law. The purpose of Paul’s letter to the Galatians was to warn against the Judaizers because they attempted to lure born-again Christians back to justification through the Law, which is impossible, Galatians 2:16. He reminds them of the freedom they have in Christ: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery” Galatians 5:1. In other words, grace and legalism cannot coexist. When you try to work your way to heaven, grace is nullified.

That is just one of many verses that people use to prove their false doctrine that a true Christian can fall from grace. I'm going to give you a few Scriptures that prove the security of the believer.

John 10:26 But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

John 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

Notice the words: eternal life, shall never perish, no man is able.

The believer is kept by the power of God through faith. 1 Peter 1:4-5: “and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.”

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING can separate the believer from Christ. Romans 8:38-39: “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Jesus will complete salvation until the end. Philippians 1:6: “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ”

Every believer is perfected forever. Hebrews 10:14: “For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

We are preserved unto the heavenly kingdom. 2 Timothy 4:18: “And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory forever and ever.” Yes, PRESERVED!

As I said earlier, a sealed and witnessed transaction is final. Ephesians 1:13: “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,” Sealed by the Spirit.

We are KEPT by the POWER of God. 1 Peter 1:5: “Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”

I do not worry about falling from grace because God is able to save and keep me. 2 Timothy 1:12: "... I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day."

Jude 1:24: "Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen."

For every one cloudy verse that seems to say a Christian can fall from grace, there are dozens to that one that say's otherwise. And remember, a pretender that falls didn't fall from grace because they never had it. Only born again people have received the grace of God. And one other thing, the flesh we live in is a factory of sin. It never shuts down and it is always producing and tempting and Satan is there trying to sell his products! We are all sinners and it's only by the grace of God that we can enter His heaven. If a true Christian starts believing legalistically, they have set grace aside for the law. If they were truly born again, they did not get unborn because that is impossible. Just like a physical birth, you can't get unborn. But they have enslaved themselves with the law. Remember what I said, grace and legalism cannot coexist. I thank God every day for His marvelous grace that I am so undeserving of. God Bless!!
