Hudson Taylor

His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.
— Matthew 25:23

I love reading church history especially how God called and used Missionaries. One of my favorite was Hudson Taylor. He was a British Missionary to China for 51 years. His accomplishments are too many to mention.

One of my favorite stories about Hudson Taylor happened on a stormy night in Birmingham, England. Hudson Taylor was to speak at a meeting at the Severn Street schoolroom. His hostess assured him that nobody would attend on such a stormy night, but Taylor insisted on going. "I must go even if there is no one but the doorkeeper." Less than a dozen people showed up, but the meeting was marked with unusual spiritual power. Half of those present either became missionaries or gave their children as missionaries; and the rest were faithful supporters of the China Inland Mission for years to come.

A historian named Ruth Tucker pretty much says it all when she summarizes the theme of Hudson Taylor's life: "No other missionary in the nineteen centuries since the Apostle Paul has had a wider vision and has carried out a more systematized plan of evangelizing a broad geographical area than Hudson Taylor."

Now you know why I love reading about Hudson Taylor. He was going to be faithful to speak even if it was to only one person. Phillip went to the desert to preach to one person, the Ethiopian eunuch. Today, God may be calling you to speak to that one person.

Another one of my favorites in church history is D.L. Moody. Every preacher I know has quoted D.L. Moody one time or another. Moody once said: “God has called us to shine, just as much as Daniel was sent into Babylon to shine. Let no one say that he cannot shine because he has not so much influence as some others may have. What God wants you to do is to use the influence you have. Daniel probably did not have much influence down in Babylon at first, but God soon gave him more because he was faithful and used what he had." I used this quote when I preached the sermon, "Called To Shine."

God called Hudson Taylor and D.L. Moody and today God is looking for those who are willing to be faithful and let their lights shine! He wants to use us in ways we could never or would never have imagined. But in order for that to happen we need to be faithful in the little things and we need to be available when He calls! God Bless!!
