Be Filled With The Spirit
Take time to read the complete chapter.
Let's say that you go out and buy yourself a new car. You’re driving it around just as happy as you can be for the first week-and-a-half, when suddenly and mysteriously it sputters a little and stops. So you call a tow truck and have it taken back to the dealer. You tell the salesman, “Listen, I just bought this car. You sold me a lemon. It doesn't run anymore."
The salesman gets the keys from you and goes out to the car and turns it on and notices that your fuel light is on and the gauge is on E. He says, "Did you ever put gas in this car?"
"No. I thought it was electric." No, it is not electric. You need to refuel your car." I know that is a far-fetched illustration but It is the same way in the Christian life. We charge along, and things are going well. But then we start to sputter. Maybe life even comes to a standstill. We wonder what is wrong. The question is, have you refueled lately? You need to be filled with the Spirit.
This is not just a one-time event. Ephesians 5 tells us, "Be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs . . ." (Ephesians 5:18–19).
From the original language, this verse could be translated, "Be constantly filled with the Spirit." We need to get refills from God. I need my tank filled daily with some High Octane Holy Ghost! If I plan a driving trip from Saginaw to California in my jeep, I know I will have to have more than one tank of gas. On our way to heaven we will need many fillings of the Spirit. We always have the Spirit but we are not always FILLED with the Spirit.
Contextually speaking, the statement in Ephesians 5 goes on to address the family, talking about husbands and wives and fathers and mothers. So God is saying, in effect, that if you want to be a good husband, then you need to be filled with the Spirit. If you want to be a good wife, then be filled with the Spirit. If you want to be a good parent, then be filled with the Spirit. The reason we have so many problems in the church today is because pastor’s and people in the church are filled with themselves! There should be a song in our hearts, submission in our spirits and sincere prayers of thanksgiving from our lips. That is how Ephesians 5 describes a Spirit Filled Christian. But churches are filled with people who have sour hearts, selfish spirits and self-centered prayers. How do I know that? Because we have so much division in the church.
The truth is, we need God's help to do everything He has called us to do. To be a good spouse, parent, employer, employee, servant, etc. we need to be filled with the Spirit. Don’t try to live a life for God on empty. Stop and get that tank filled! When you’re singing and making melody in you hearts to the Lord, Submitting to one another in the fear of the Lord and sincerely thanking God always for all things, You’re probably filled with the Spirit.
